If you’re a fan of all things geeky and weird, you are sure to be entertained by some of the animes on this list! Spy x Family
Unless you live under a rock, you will most likely have seen something about this up-and-coming anime. This one is written and illustrated by mangaka Tatsuya Endo. This awesomeness can simply be described as a cross between James Bond and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. With a little twist- the inclusion of a strange little girl and a quirky little family, of course!
Set in the fantastical yet cold war-esque nations of Westalis and Ostania, Twilight is set to spy on Donovan Desmond. Desmond is the leader of a far-right party called the National Unity Party in Ostania). To do so, he must do something no spy has ever done before. He sets up a ’false family’ and sends that child to a prestigious private school. This is a strategy to get close to Desmond’s son. Naturally, hijinks ensue.
Each member of the ‘false family’ has a double life. Namely, his ‘wife’, Yor Briar, is a professional assassin – and his adopted daughter an esper, who can read minds. The vast amounts of dramatic irony are sure to leave you laughing for hours. For those who love the found family and secret double-life tropes, then this is the show for you.
Must Watch Anime! Chainsaw Man
Written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto of Fire Punch and Goodbye Eri fame. You know that you’ll be in for a wild ride. The first part of Chainsaw Man has finished, with the anime beginning to run during the autumn to winter seasons. Chainsaw Man is set in a mirror world like ours, except for one obvious difference. The inclusion of devils, which are creatures born from and embody human fears. Unsurprisingly, it’s a pretty wild, gory ride. Denji, our main character, becomes the eponymous ‘Chainsaw Man’ by merging with the Chainsaw Devil. Afterward, he gets picked up by a beautiful and mysterious lady named Makima. She is the head of the Public Safety Division and persuades him to join and become a devil hunter. The story just spirals from there, with plot twist after plot twist hitting you like a train wreck.
Not for the faint of heart, Chainsaw Man embodies Tatsuki Fujimoto’s strange brand of humor. It will definitely keep you on your toes hoping that your favorite character doesn’t get killed. Yet underneath all the horror and gruesomeness, there is a strange sense of bittersweet hope that despite everything. So long as you have someone beside you, things are going to turn out okay. A great anime for Halloween, if you don’t mind the wild journey!
Anime Favorites – Attack on Titan
With it being around 10 years since its inception, Attack on Titan is nearing its end, with the final season to come in 2023. No doubt it has garnered high praise and several accolades, including the Kodansha Manga Award. Set in a supposedly post-apocalyptic world that is run over by man-eating giants called ‘titans’. The remaining humans live inside a kingdom surrounded by walls. However, when one of the walls falls and the titans ravage the place. A survivor and orphan named Eren Yeager decide to take up arms with his friends, Mikasa and Armin. They gain revenge on the titans and find the freedom he so desperately seeks. On his journey, he makes new friends and new enemies. He then realizes that the world isn’t like what he initially believed.
Isayama is a master at conceiving plot twists, and the last few seasons hit it on the nail. You’ll be left wondering about the true nature of the world, and when you rewatch from the beginning. Isayama is also a master at character development. Some characters who you hate turn into characters you start to root for. However, the characters who you initially loved might end up spiraling and becoming the worst villains imaginable.
Despite all the amazing action, animation, and gore, Attack on Titan remains poignant, haunting, and existentialist. No one is a monster, and yet everyone is a monster. It strives to ask, how can characters live freely and be themselves, in such a cruel yet beautiful world? What is freedom, and what is the price you are willing to pay for that freedom?
